American Dream, American Discontent

In this topical survey of 20th Century American Literature we will read novelists who helped invent the American Dream and others who dismantled it, including Theodore Dreiser, Dorothy Parker, Ralph Ellison, and Mary Gaitskill.

Spring 2013 (9 Jan. - 20 March)
Americans Abroad
In this course we will follow a range of American travellers—tourists, expats, and self-styled aristocrats—as they find the truth about themselves reflected in foreign eyes. Writers will include Henry James, Paul Bowles, James Baldwin, and Deborah Eisenberg.

Summer 2013 (24 April - 12 June)
Go West!

In this short course we will consult cowboys and Indians, missionaries and movie moguls, to sort out truth from legend at America’s receding frontier. Writers will include Willa Cather, Cormac McCarthy, and Sherman Alexie.
